ANCIENT GREEK SCULPTURE

ΧΛΕΤΣΟΣ ΒΑΣΙΛΗΣ

Published on Oct 9, 2012

There are three main periods of Greek Sculpture; Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic. The Greeks were blessed with a large supply of marble, which was what they used most in their sculptures. Bronze was also used in their artistic work of humans. Many of the original sculptures were damaged or destroyed. Yet, many still survived because the Romans make copies or duplications of the original works. The Archaic period was the earliest period in Greek Sculpture which started around 600 B.C. and lasted until 480 B.C. These works have a stiff and ridged appearance similar to that of the Egyptian sculpture. The second period, the Classical period, was between the Archaic and Hellenistic times. The Classical period shows a very large shift from the stiff Archaic to a more realistic and sometimes idealistic portrayal of the human figure. Females, after the 5th century B.C., were depicted nude, often with flowing robes. The robes gave the sculpture the idea of movement and realism in an effort by the artist to show humans more realistically. The third period, the Hellenistic period, started a little before 300 B.C. To the average person, it is more difficult to see the distinctions between the Classical and Hellenistic period. Both periods did the majority of their sculpture as nudes. The Greeks portrayed a young, vigorous, and athletic person in their works. These works idealized the individual and in a way, attempted to capture the idea of youth and strength in their design. The works reflect the commonly held views of youth, strength, and courage which were encouraged in the Greek City states. A couple of interesting notes about the Greek sculpture. Greeks portrayed the gods in very similar fashion as they did the regular humans. There were no distinctions of size or body make up in their sculpture which would suggest that the gods where greater or more powerful then the humans. This is also similar in Greek stories, where the gods are shown to have very human characteristics, both good and bad.

The Human Body in Ancient Greek Art and Thought

Portland Art Museum

Published on Oct 15, 2012

IAN JENKINS, PH.D.

SENIOR CURATOR, DEPARTMENT OF GREECE AND ROME, BRITISH MUSEUM

Jenkins explores Greek notions of ideal beauty in both nude and draped images of the male and female human bodies. He contrasts the moral aesthetic of sound mind in sound body with other representations to show how the human form served as a bearer of many meanings. Anthropomorphic gods, larger than life heroes, part-human part-animal monsters of myth are all considered as a visual language. His talk concludes with the legacy of the Greek experience in the Roman era and its transmission to the present day.

Colours of the Ancient Past

Faces of Ancient Europe ~ ArianrhodJelena

Published on Oct 17, 2016

The ancient past was full of European people. From China to North Africa, and from Europe to even the American Continent before, not only Columbus, but before the first ‘official discovery’ in CE 999 attributed to Leif Erikson.

It seems also that the European ancient past was more colourful than previously thought, or so I have discovered recently. Archaeologist Vinzenz Brinkmann conducted a study in 2005 at the Glyptothek in Munich using ultraviolet light that revealed all ancient Greek statues showed traces of having been painted with colour pigmentation, but not only that, most of these sculptures still showed extremely elaborated design patterns which were completely invisible to the naked eye until now, thus revealing these old statues were far from being the classical model of white marble pieces of art that we had taken for granted for hundreds of years but works of art full of brilliant colours.

Transformations – Classical Sculpture in Colour

Special exhibition at the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen

13.9 - 7.12 2014

Antiquity was white – as white as marble! For hundreds of years this fact has been one of the mainstays in the story of the origin of Western culture. This autumn’s major special exhibition turns the idea of the white world of Antiquity upside down and shows that Greek and Roman sculpture were colourful to a high degree.

Roman Sculpture and Colour: the "Treu Head" (Ancient Greek and Roman Color / Polychromy)

Giovanni Verri

Published on Nov 25, 2014

This contribution presents recent work on an important Roman marble head of the mid-second century ad from the collection of the British Museum (1884,0617.1). The head was found on the Esquiline Hill in Rome in 1884 and soon after its discovery was acquired for the British Museum. Unusually, it retained extensive traces of its original polychromy, including otherwise rarely preserved skin pigments. Ever since the German scholar Georg Treu published the sculpture in 1889, it has played a significant part in the discussion of ancient sculptural polychromy and in particular the question of whether or not the flesh parts of marble sculptures were originally painted. However, early doubts about the authenticity of the pigment traces led some twentieth-century scholars to question the authenticity of the sculpture as a whole.

For this study, the polychromy of the head was extensively investigated using non-invasive techniques (ultraviolet and visible-induced luminescence imaging) and invasive analytical methods, including Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

It was found that complex mixtures of pigments, and selected pigments for specific areas, were used to create subtle tonal variations. These included: calcite, red and yellow ochres, carbon black and Egyptian blue for the flesh tones; calcite to provide highlights on the flesh areas; lead white and Egyptian blue for the eyeballs; a red organic colourant in the nostrils, the lachrymal ducts and the inner parts of the mouth; and red and yellow ochre for the hair.

The examination confirmed beyond doubt the authenticity of the preserved pigments and thereby the sculpture itself, which can now rightfully reassume its important place in the art historical discussion of the polychromy of ancient sculpture. In addition, it provided valuable insights into Roman painting techniques on marble and allowed revealing comparisons to be made with other ancient polychrome works, such as funerary portraits.

However, despite the exceptional state of preservation of the colour on the ‘Treu Head’, the small amount of surviving pigment and the extremely complex painting technique do not allow for a satisfactory reconstruction. With the aim of excluding a modern reinterpretation of ancient painting techniques, the colour reconstruction proposed here was created by digitally ‘transplanting’ images of face parts of sculptures and mummy portraits showing paint layers similar to those observed on the ‘Treu Head’. The evidence for the comparison is based on the scientific investigation undertaken on the ‘Treu Head’ and the comparative sculptures and mummy portraits presented in this presentation. The novelty of this colour reconstruction lies not only in the thorough scientific reliability of the data, but also in the use of only Roman painted objects.

The final appearance of the head is therefore not intended as a definitive reconstruction of the ‘original’ appearance of the head, but as a ‘possible’ appearance. In other words, from the scientific evidence the head could have looked like the reconstruction proposed here.

Reconstruction of Ancient Athenian Girl

NTDTV

Uploaded on Sep 14, 2010

Scientists in Greece have reconstructed the face of an ancient Athenian girl, using the teeth and skull found in a mass grave. Named "Myrtis", the life size mannequin now forms part of an exhibition called "Face to Face with the Past."

Greek scientists and archaeologists have given a face to an ancient Athenian girl from the 5th century B.C.

The facial reconstruction process utilized the teeth and skull from her skeleton, discovered in a mass grave in 1995.

The 11 year old girl, known as "Myrtis", died of typhoid fever during a plague in 430 B.C.

Manolis Papagrigorakis, a professor and orthodontist from the University of Athens, worked with a team of 20 scientists on the project.

[Manolis Papagrigorakis, Professor and Orthodontist]: (Greek)

"We had all of the skull, the jaw, and the teeth, and something very rare - the milk teeth on the skull. These all helped us to be accurate with the final product, and we are very close - 95 percent close to reality with the final product."

The scientists used a 3-D technological program called the "Manchester method" - from the University of Manchester - often used on Egyptian mummies, for the reconstruction process.

[Manolis Papagrigorakis, Professor and Orthodontist]: (Greek)

"The first part of the research was an analysis of the ancient DNA in order find out what the Athenians of the period had died of in Athens. This study took place in 2006 and it was found to be typhoid fever."

Typhoid fever killed many during the period, including Pericles, the great ancient Athenian statesman who had the vision of building the Acropolis.

The exhibition at the museum has been called "Face to Face with the Past", and Papagrigorakis says they will also attempt the same reconstruction on another man and woman.

Because of her death from typhoid fever, Myrtis has even been made a representative of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, a project to raise awareness over various issues in the world including "United Nations Millennium Development"
