Grade/Subject: Preschool & Child Care
Last updated August 10, 2020: Hello parents and welcome to My Little Preschool. I wanted to take a few moments and introduce myself to you. Right off the bat, I want you to know that I have a degree, however it's not in teaching, it's in Health Care. Now naturally you want to know what makes me qualified to teach preschool. Aside from being licensed for in-home child care, with CPR & First Aid training, Food Handler's Permit, etc., I have raised a preschooler myself. 😉
We are very proud of Daniel. By the time he was five-years-old not only could he count well over 200, he knew his alphabet, could READ (real books), write, and knew basic math. He also knew a little Spanish and a little American Sign Language. Now I must be honest, I did not teach him all of this on my own. He was in a commercial daycare starting at six-weeks-old and was in a YMCA preschool at three-years-old. But those educators’ goals were only to teach him the basics. All of those teachers agreed that his level of knowledge was above his peers.
How is it that when Daniel was a preschooler he knew how to do so much already? It's no secret...Practice and Patience! At home my husband and I work with him at an individual level every day, on little things and they add up. Not with 20+ other children, where attention cannot always be individually provided. Now of course there are other children at my in-home preschool, but on a much smaller scale. I am only able to have eight full time children at any one time (as allowed by my child care license) which still includes my own two sons, since I home-school them. This means your child will be able to get more individualized attention as they deserve, in a small preschool class of six children.
As I mentioned, I home-school our sons. Daniel will be eleven years old this November and where in public school, he would be going into the Fifth grade this fall, he is going into the Sixth grade. Math is his favorite subject and I have to limit the time he spends on it or he would do nothing else all day 😊. He also participates in extra curricular activities such as basketball, theater/drama classes, and has been taking the piano lessons for nearly six years. March 2019 we completed the adoption process of a little boy from India. Charan (pronounced Chuh-run) is now nine years old, and has been adjusting VERY well to our family. He had lived in a foster home with nine other children for six years and had been well taken care of there. English is his first language, and he had been attending a private Christian based school for four years. (We do not practice any religion in our home.) Last year blessed us twice with children, as Elizabeth was born in December 2019. We were very surprised as we did not think we would be able to have any more children, but we are so excited to have her and now fully believe that Charan was just supposed to be our son first! 😍
Now a little about me, I grew up as the oldest of four children from a blended family, and am the oldest of all my cousins. My lifetime has been full of taking care of younger children. This has largely contributed to my patience. I also love children, and I know it sounds cliché and every teacher says it, but I really do. I love seeing the world through their eyes and experiencing the excitement of trying new things with them.
A little more about me...My husband and I have been together for 16 years (married for 15 in October) and we have both lived in the Puyallup area for over 16 years; he actually went to Spanaway Lake High School. Prior to opening my own in-home preschool, I worked for an insurance company for five years, where I was licensed by Washington State. Before that I worked in Accounts Receivable for seven years. My husband has been working for Pierce County Superior Court for the last eight years and before that he worked for King County District Court for four years.
You're probably asking 'Why have I started my own in-home preschool & child care?' Since I can remember, I have always wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. When I was growing up we always had someone at home with us, and it was very comforting for me. It was important to me that my children had the same comforts, knowing I was home and available for them. Well, unfortunately when Daniel was born, our livelihood depended on my income. I was not able to stay home with him and it tore me up. Many nights were spent analyzing how I could stay home. Sunday nights were the worst for me, because I knew spending quality time with my family had come to an end. Other ideas for income had been pondered, but none really offered me what I wanted, which was to be home caring for and teaching my children. Then my husband suggested that I open an in-home daycare. I immediately loved the idea. I could stay home and take care of not only my children but other parents children, who like me, had to go to work. In the early stages of planning my daycare, I found out that I could have an in-home preschool. Everyone always praises Daniel for his intelligence, and I knew that I could teach other children the basics just as I had taught him. So I now welcome you to My Little Preschool.
My Little Preschool has been operating for over six years now and I am SO VERY happy with my choice to start it! We have had a great first few years, and we have all learned a lot from each other. Of course it hasn't been without its difficulties, but I wouldn't trade this for anything! Two years ago we even completed the remodel of our garage to be the NEW My Little Preschool room!
Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me.
Should you have any further questions please feel free to email or text me (having a phone conversation with six kiddos running around is very difficult).
