The first interscholastic chess tournament in the Mountain View Whisman School District was held in 2004 as a dual meet between Huff and Bubb elementary schools. Since then the tournament has grown to include all 11 MVWSD schools and has even invited others from time to time. This tournament was founded by Kieran Gonsalves, and its success is mainly due to his passion for chess and desire to share it with the children of Mountain View.
The tournament is run by volunteers, most of whom are parents of tournament players. We charge no entry fee; costs are paid by the PTAs of the participating schools. We rely on parents for help in keeping the tournament running, everything from monitoring the playing area to baking cookies. If you are the parent of a child playing chess this year, especially if you have played competitively yourself or at least know the rules, please step up! Talk to any coach or tournament official or send email to mvwsdchess@gmail.com.
