Tournament rules and etiquette
NEW for 2025: Is your child interested in playing chess but don't yet know all the rules and how to check-mate? Are you an adult chess enthusiast who wants to play? The "For Fun" Division will be an organized set of matches held ourdoor by the lunch tables that anyone can participate in, regardless of age and skill level. You will be paired up with another player around your level. Student volunteers (alumni of past tournament participants) will be on-hand to provide guidance and tips as needed. There's no need to register for the "For Fun" division, just come by on the day of the tournament and play!
The first interscholastic chess tournament in the Mountain View Whisman School District was held in 2004 as a dual meet between Huff and Bubb elementary schools. Since then the tournament has grown to include all 11 MVWSD schools and has even invited others from time to time. This tournament was founded by Kieran Gonsalves, and its success is mainly due to his passion for chess and desire to share it with the children of Mountain View.
The tournament is run by volunteers, most of whom are parents of tournament players. We charge no entry fee; costs are paid by the PTAs of the participating schools. We rely on parents for help in keeping the tournament running, everything from monitoring the playing area to baking cookies. If you are the parent of a child playing chess this year, especially if you have played yourself or at least know the rules, please step up! Talk to any tournament volunteer or send email to angela.ge@gmail.com.
