Having entered and won the 'Beat Contest' judged by Beatles television producer Johnnie Hamp,
at the Baths Ballroom in 1965, They were invited with the second and third placed groups to go
Manchester for a recording session. The Scunthorpe Star newspaper which sponsored the
Beat Contest laid on a coach for them all, but it broke down on the way to Manchester and their
day's recording was reduced to a couple of hours during which they were asked to perform original songs.
As they performed mainly covers, in their case the hits of The Who, The Kinks and all manner of
blues numbers, they weren't able to offer any original pieces only their cover versions of songs like
Smokestack Lightning - so no record contracts were forthcoming.
The Rebels played all the usual venues (pubs, clubs and dancehalls)in the district and surrounding counties
Ian Matthews sang with the Rebels for a while before going to London and joining 'Fairport Convention'
and later recording with his own group 'Matthews Southern Comfort' which had a big international
hit with 'Woodstock'.
They, 'The Rebels', were offered a summer season in Barcelona but as they all had jobs, they didn't
take up the offer - perhaps an opportunity for fame and fortune missed!
Mike Graveling (lead guitarist),left Scunthorpe and 'The Rebels' in 1965 to follow a teaching career and the
group reformed as the Moderation with the addition of Bill Gibson.
