Hugeldal was founded around 300 IC to take advantage of banded iron deposits and copper ores found in the foothills of the Gray Mountains south of Übersreik. The locals claim that it expanded during the reign of Sigismund II to help meet their demands for mesh heights and spearheads.
In 1112 IC the black plague devastated the area. In the resulting turmoil, the rulers of the Empire realized how important it was to keep the iron production sites running, and sponsored the founding of a hospice of the Shallyan temple in the city, for which it has become famous.
The Shallyans disapproved of some of the most unhygienic habits of miners and gathered to ban certain "unhealthy" entertainments. This has led to an association between the townspeople and the Strigany people, who arrive and depart in groups of colorful cars. There is always a small community of Strigany in an impromptu camp just outside the city walls. The Strigany trade with the townspeople and provide opportunities to enjoy gambling and other distractions. However, they are reputed to be light-handed and traffic with unfavorable forces, and are prohibited from entering the city, according to the statutes and laws enacted in 1299 IC.
Hugeldal has suffered a decline in the last century. The original mines have become an extensive complex of passages and few miners work them, since it requires a dangerous walk to find mineral deposits. Other nearby mines have been opened, but Hugeldal is still home to the majority of miners working in the area.
The city is not far from Übersreik, and ostensibly falls under the domain of the von Jungfreud family. They maintain a limited presence here, mainly with the visual display of an impressive house. A minor family member, Matthias von Jungfreud, was appointed lord of the mansion in 2514 IC.
Hugeldal has a ramshackle, hastily constructed appearance despite its age. Most human dwellings in the town are constructed from timber planks and boards, though the small dwarf quarter and more important buildings, such as the hospice and manor house, are constructed largely from stone. Recently, families from farms and small mining communities near Hugeldal have fallen on hard times. Frightened survivors do not give a coherent account of what has happened. It seems that within a short space of time, a large area of farmland was blighted and springs that had once quenched the thirst of miners had begun to spout black stagnant fi lth. Beastmen have been reported to be on the move throughout the stricken region. As a result, Hugeldal is currently home to a small but highly agitated community of refugees. Richter Holstein, the town’s zealous priest of Sigmar, was not going to sit by whilst creatures of Chaos ravaged the lands. For days he preached in the marketstrasse, imploring all adult men with strong sword arms to venture forth with him and destroy their enemies. Richter left Hugeldal three weeks ago at the head of a ragtag group of militia last seen heading east into the surrounding forest. Even with the infl ux of refugees, the population of the town is much depleted. The Ghoulpox has claimed many lives, and the Sigmarite crusade, whilst small, has drawn away a signifi cant number of those who were left. Hugeldal is now something of a ghost town, and away from the few busy areas the streets are deserted and the town has an eerie feel. Even more disturbing is a recent pronouncement made by Lady Agnetha herself that threatens to plunge Hugeldal into chaos.
Almost two years ago, on a glorious Sigmarzeit day, the charming Agnetha von Bruner entered Hugeldal in a splendid white wedding carriage and married Matthias. They moved to the city's manor house and, in a year, the noble and vivacious nobleman had provided an heir to her noble husband. The happy couple named the boy Leos.
It was in this year that another resident of the city arrived. Acclaimed doctor Wilhelm Verfullen moved to Hugeldal from Altdorf and set up a consultation in the city.
The following year he hit the Smallpox of the Ghoul, wreaking havoc on the town's population. The noble family got sick and Matthias soon succumbed to the disease. The shallyanos had no power to prevent the disease despite their calls to miracles and blessings. In growing despair, Agnetha turned to the talented Doktor Verfullen. With the help of the Doktor, Leos recovered, although few people feel optimistic that the child will ever lead a normal life.
Agnetha also survived although smallpox had ruined her once attractive features. In fact, some sardonic citizens suggest that the noble woman mourns the loss of her appearance rather than the death of her late husband.
Hugeldal has a rickety appearance, hurriedly built despite his age. Most of the human dwellings in the city are built with planks and wooden boards, although the small dwarf neighborhood and the most important buildings, such as the hospice and the manor house, are built largely of stone.
The town of Hugeldal is surrounded by a high wooden palisade. To the left of the city gate is a small Morr garden surrounded by a dry stone wall. To the right of the door there is an open area in which there are several Striganos wagons and several bonfires. There are several Striganos inside the camp, mostly street vendors, fortune tellers, wives and children.
Recently, families of farms and small mining communities near Hugeldal have fallen on hard times. Scared survivors do not give a coherent explanation of what happened. It seems that in a short space of time, a large area of farmland was affected and the springs that once quenched the thirst of the miners had begun to shed black and stagnant dirt. It has been reported that beastmen are in motion throughout the affected region. As a result, Hugeldal is currently home to a small but very hectic refugee community.
Richter Holstein, the city's jealous Sigmar priest, was not going to sit while the creatures of Chaos ravaged the lands. For days he preached in the marketstrasse, imploring all adult men with strong arms to wield a weapon to venture.
