1. Where are you from?
Born in the Empire (province unknown, suspect Reikland Township of Ubersreik)
Was raised in Bretonnia, in the Dukedom of Couronne. Couronne is known for two things: 1) Producing the finest horseman in Bretonnia and 2) Being the seat of power of the church of Shallya and home of the Most Holy Matriarch Lisegund (High Priestess of Shallya).
2. What is your family like?
Bertrand (a.k.a Bear or Barry) has no memory or knowledge about his family.
3. What is your social class?
While the Empire remains a harsh land in which to strive; Bretonnia’s cast and feudal system adds another crushing layer of despair upon the common folk. While most peasants may never dream to aspire to greatness; priests of Shallya benefit from some moderate level of status and education. The refusal of the cult to become involved in politics has made it a popular target of charity from wealthy nobles and merchants, and the success of the priestesses in channeling that wealth to the needy is notable.
While Priests do not carry important political weight, they are treated significantly better than the common folk. This explains why Priests are even allowed to leave and travel across the kingdoms; whereas a peasant would never be allowed to do so. Priests of Shallya benefit from the fact that Shallya is universally loved an accepted; however they are far from receiving the same level of respect as Priests of Sigmar.
4. What did you do before you became an adventurer?
Before leaving Couronne, Bertrand served the Church in a number of capacities. He did
much manual labour, he also tended to the sick in the infirmary, as well as cooking for and caring for the poor.
Bertrand also spent a lot of time conversing with others. He would chat with and learn from anyone. He quickly understood that “Every man is my superior in at least one way”… this served him well and enables him to learn and form strong bonds with those around him.
5. Why did you become an adventurer?
It is custom for Priests of Shallya to leave the temples after a certain age. While the official reason is to allow the Priests to go spread Shallya’S mercy across the land… the real reason is to keep the young adults away from the flock of impressionable priestesses.
Seeing as Bear needed to set-out; he sought it wise to seek-out his origin and travel towards Ubersreik to see if he could learn anything.
6. How religious are you?
Very. Bertrand believes wholeheartedly in Shallya, in her grace, and in the power of her mercy. He is a Disciple and travelling Priest of Shallya, a member of the Order of the Bleeding Heart, and a follower of the Sect of the Dove’s Makers. The Dove’s Makers venerate Shallya as well as the wisdom of her parents: Morr (death) and Verona (justice). Bertrand abides by Shallyan strictures,
i) Avoid killing. (All followers of Shallya take this stricture extremely seriously.)
ii) Never refuse healing to a supplicant genuinely in need.
iii) Never halt a soul when it is time for it to depart.
iv) Go about your life unarmed. A stout walking staff is all you’ll ever need.
v) Abhor the Fly Lord in all his forms.
vi) Do not waste energy on your own pleasure
7. Who are your friends and enemies?
Bertrand is friends with all he meets, but in earnest he currently has but one friend; Mr. Harlon Bequin d'Artois, with whom he travels.
8. What are your prized possessions?
Bertrand does not put great value of material possessions and will often donate his own wealth to the temple or to those in needs.
That being said, Bertrand has accumulate pieces of armor as well as his shield through acts of mercy… for which the families insisted to give these gifts to Bertrand. He wears these pieces as a symbol of respect for those he helped and as a reminder that he must still press on to help others.
9. Who are you loyal to?
Bear is loyal to Shallya, her followers, to all who do good in this world. Bertrand also harbors a love for his homeland of Bretonnia.
10. Who do you love and hate?
Bertrand is still young and does not carry hate in his heart. He loves all those around him, but more specifically people in need.
