20161022 Wildflower Meadow and WL Maintenenace

Our wildflower meadow has looked better in the past. A combination of neglect and original faults in the design have resulted in this park feature becoming overcome by course grasses that suffocate the original bloom.

None the less is essential that the schedule of two cuts a year, one in May and the other in the Autumn, should be maintained. The meadows would otherwise become shrubland and be much more difficult to re-engeener as a biodiverse and enjoyable wild flower corner.

It was a sunny day and in spite of some problems that friends of Surrey Square Park are overcoming, few of us managed to get together and after having successfully request from the park authority that for this year they would mow the very tough vegetation , we set out to complete the job and move the cutting to the WildLife Area. There we hope to use them to create organic compost, to mix or cover the present very poor soil.

While we did not have the presence of previous years, we made up with enthusiasm and determination to finish the job as efficiently and thoroughly as we were able to do.

Still, after the gallant efforts have secure the success of our enterprise, even the best of us was feeling the effect of the prolonged endeavour!

It was time to take a break and after retreating to the WildLife Area enjoyed Elizabeth's welcome tea and biscuits.

We soaked in the autumn sunshine but soon we were back to duty, cleaning the WLA and doing other maintenance works, as needed.

The WLA and wildflower meadow will need some serious remedial work but the for the time being it look much better.

Well done everybody!!
