Project taught by Dr. Eva Szillery at the Downtown Education Collaborative in Lewiston, ME.
The project was originally designed by: Mette Pederson
This project requires ten identical units. I chose to use two colors so I
could alternate them to create a more interesting looking final project.
Step 1: Fold the paper in half as shown below.
Step 2: Fold the paper in half again so that the fold lines create four
congruent squares, as shown below.
Step 3: Fold the top corners down so that their edges line up with the
horizontal center line as shown below.
Step 4: Fold the bottom edge up so that it lines up with the bottom of the
two triangles as shown below.
Step 5: Undo the fold you did in the previous step and turn the paper over
so that it looks like the image below.
Step 6: Now observe the shapes that you have in the image above.
Notice that you have an isosceles triangle with that is stacked on top of
two congruent rectangles that have the same length as the base of the
isosceles triangle. Create a fold that splits the middle shape (rectangle)
in half as shown below.
Step 7: Now turn the paper over, and use the folds you made above to
shape the paper into a "hat" as shown below. Notice that there is a shorter
rectangular piece in the front of the hat and a taller rectangular piece in the
back of the hat. Also notice that there is a vertical line at the center of the
triangular piece where you can see an opening.
Step 8: Fold the front part of the "hat" down as shown below. Then fold
the back left triangular piece forward so it lines up with the side of the
triangle.
Step 9: Next, fold the right triangular piece down and forward as shown
below.
Step 10: Now fold the thin rectangle up so that it covers the lower portion
of the large isosceles, triangle as well as the triangular tabs you just folded
down.
Step 11: Now follow the visual examples below to fold the "hat" in half as
as shown.
Step 12: Below you will see two pieces identical to the one you just created. Once you have two pieces
prepared, line them up as shown below.
Step 13: Now slide the tabs of the red shape into the openings on both sides
of the orange shape as shown below.
Step 14: Push the pieces together gently until they cannot go any further.
See below.
Step 15: Finish assembling the Mette Ring by continuing this process of
connecting the pieces. See the pictures below for visual examples.
