This course offers a background in materials science and manufacturing. It focuses on properties, and applications of engineering materials such as composites, ceramics, polymers, metals and alloys. This course offers both laboratory and teaching components. It discusses the physical and chemical make-up of materials, their mechanical properties, their manufacture and applications. The manufacturing module introduces fundamentals of production systems, tooling, and various manufacturing methods such as casting, metal cutting, extrusion, injection molding, welding, and related fabrication techniques. Students are introduced to the concept of product engineering, product life-cycle, computer aided manufacturing and design, sustainable manufacturing and productivity.
