What is the focus of this course?

The course focuses on four underlying principles, called Big Ideas, encompassing evolution; cellular processes and homeostasis; genetics and information transfer; and ecology and biological interactions. The course also emphasizes inquiry-based learning and the development of science practices and skills. For more details go to the two-page Course Overview (.pdf/555KB).

What is the equivalent college-level course?

Introductory biology.

Are there any student prerequisites?

Yes: prior high school courses in biology and chemistry.

What math skills should my students bring to the course?

The most helpful are:

  • basic algebra

  • how to collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data

  • basic concepts of probability and statistical analysis

  • graphing, including setting axes and plotting data

What formulas do my students need to know?

Go to Appendix B in the AP Biology Course and Exam Description (.pdf/4.88MB) for a chart of equations and formulas used in the course.

What is the lab requirement?

A minimum of eight guided-inquiry labs (two per Big Idea), constituting a minimum of 25 percent of instructional time.

What is a guided-inquiry lab?

In this type of inquiry lab the students themselves design/select procedures to investigate a question presented by the teacher.
