We will use a phonics program called Fundations which teaches phonics rules to help our first graders decode and spell. Open Circle: In addition to the above units, Open Circle is also included in the social studies curriculum. This social and emotional program recognizes that positive relationships and supportive, caring communities play an important role in the academic and social successes of children. We will gather as a class in a circle twice a week (15-20 minutes each meeting) and will discuss topics such as listening, remaining calm, cooperating, expressing anger appropriately, problem solving, overcoming obstacles, setting positive goals, and many more important social and emotional topics. Responsive Classroom: To supplement the Open Circle curriculum and to develop social and emotional skills, I will also include additional community-building practices such as Morning Meeting, Energizers, and Closing Circle throughout the day. For more information on this program, please click here.
