Class Information

Algebra 1

Welcome:

I am excited about the opportunity to get to know you, and I look forward to a fantastic year together. Through skill-building, problem-solving, and collaboration, your mathematical thinking skills will growical thinking.

Expectations:

Every day, students are expected to come to class prepared with the necessary materials and a great attitude.  Also, students are expected to be on their very best behavior.

Students are to be kind, quiet, and attentive during instruction. Students may not leave their seats at any time without permission.

Supplies:

-Three-ring binder (The binder may be shared with other classes.)

-Loose-leaf notebook paper

-Graph paper (quad ruled)

-Sharpened pencils or mechanical pencils with plenty of extra lead

-TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator (the color edition is the best option)

* Students are expected to have all materials every day.

Homework Policy:

Most of the time, homework is checked for completion and effort. Occasionally, homework may be checked for accuracy. Sometimes, a warm-up or an exit ticket may be assessed as a homework grade. All work MUST be shown on each problem in order to receive credit. Answers will be given to all homework in class, but only a few of the problems will be demonstrated for clarification. Students should be able to use those to find and correct their mistakes on other problems. The STUDENT is responsible for making corrections on homework and asking questions if clarification is needed.

Homework should be expected almost every night. It is occasionally assigned on Fridays. Students should NOT have to spend large amounts of time on homework. If this becomes a problem, please speak to the teacher.

Test and Quiz Policy:

Each unit or chapter will have at least one test based on the information learned in class. Students will have prior notice of these tests and will review the material in class. The test dates will be announced.

Throughout the unit, there will be quizzes. The quizzes may be announced or unannounced. If students study daily and complete homework regularly, quizzes should not cause an issue.

If students miss tests or quizzes due to an absence, they must see the teacher. Arrangements must be made before the student attends Friday make-up testing sessions in Ms. Cannon's classroom. Tests and quizzes must be completed within five school days of their return.

Make-Up Work Policy (five-day schedule):

Make-up work needs to be completed within five school days of the absence. Assignments that need to be completed will be placed in the make-up work folders hanging in the classroom filed under the student's class period, and it is the student's responsibility to check the make-up folders after an absence to find the missing work.

Assigning High School Credit:

Students who take Algebra 1 in middle school will be enrolled in Honors Algebra I and will earn an extra one-half quality point. Students and their parents should also be aware that any student taking a Carnegie Unit before ninth grade must earn at least an 85. Students may retake the course the following year. In this case, only the second attempt will be used in figuring the student’s GPA, and only the second attempt will show in the transcript.

Late Work Policy:

Late work is not accepted, so zeros are given for any late homework. If a project is late, 10 points will be deducted for each school day it is late. It is the student's responsibility to complete any missing homework to keep up with the class. Homework builds on content taught in class, so students cannot afford to miss homework assignments. A few missing assignments can really take a toll on the final grade, so please complete all assignments on time. An oops pass may only be used for small homework assignments.

Please remember the oops pass assignment is STILL DUE the following day for full credit. It is the student's responsibility to turn in the assignment. The teacher will not ask for oops pass assignments.

Grading Policy:

Report cards are printed at the end of each quarter. The South Carolina Uniform Grading Scale will be used. This scale is as follows:

100-90 A   89-80 B   79-70 C   69-60 D   59-0 F

Both students and parents are encouraged to check grades online often.
