Hello, I am Mr. Oldham and I will be your math teacher this year. This will be my 17th year at Hoover. I love teaching math, and I am glad to have the privilege of teaching you this year, but there are many other things I enjoy doing with my time as well. First, I have a beautiful family that I spend much of my time with. My wife and I were married October 14th, 2005, and she is also a teacher here in the Merced City School District. I have a 25 year old daughter Courtney, and my son Alex is a sophomore at El Capitan High School this year. When I'm not spending time with my family I enjoy working out at home, watching a good movie, and online gaming on my PC. Some of the games I currently play are Unreal Tournament 2004, America's Army, Escape From Tarkov, Rainbow Six Siege, and Call Of Duty. My son and I like to play Minecraft, Scrap Mechanic, and Enter The Gungeon together as well. My wife also plays Minecraft, and is currently playing Arc Survival Evolved. My daughter plays Call Of Duty with me a few times a week as well.
Before I became a teacher I worked many different jobs ranging from retail work, warehouse work, new home construction (plumbing and framing), computer repair, and gardening to name a few. I can honestly say that teaching is the most rewarding, and most challenging of all the jobs I've ever had, but it is also my favorite one too. To become a teacher, I started by earning a two year associate's degree from Merced Community College in 2002. From there I transferred to CSU Stanislaus and went on to earn my 4 year bachelor's degree in 2004. Then to earn my teaching credential, which requires an additional year of coursework, I continued at CSU Stanislaus and became a fully credentialed teacher in 2005. You can view my or any other teacher's California credential by going to: http://www.ctc.ca.gov/. Once there, click "Search for an Educator", then click "public search" and simply type the name of the teacher you are looking for.
My education didn't stop there however, as I believe learning is a lifelong endeavor. I have since taken many classes to continue learning new skills to help me become a better teacher and individual. My first couple of years I took many math courses to become a highly qualified math teacher. I've also completed numerous google certifications.
I also worked as a PCF (Paid Call Firefighter) for the Merced County fire department out of station 85 McKee for 12 years. I became a firefighter because over the years my father, who was a career firefighter with Cal-Fire, had always encouraged me to become a PCF. Finally in 2011 I decided I would like to give it a try, so I took the necessary classes, passed all the tests, and I'm glad I did. I was a firefighter from 2011 to 2022 and I enjoyed it very much. I learned many new skills as a firefighter, and I was fortunate to be able to use those skills to help the people in our community.
I hope to learn a little about you this year as well. We will work very hard to learn about math and how to utilize it in our lives, but math is just a part of our day. I will expect you to work hard during the time you are scheduled to be in my class, but when class time is done try to enjoy a variety of activities to help keep a healthy balance in your life. School is important, but so is the rest of your life.
