Syllabus and Policies

Welcome to Chemistry with Mr. Kolias

Description - In this high school course, students will explore various topics of general chemistry.

The course will include the following units of study: Matter and Measurements; Atomic Structure; Electrons in Atoms; The Periodic Table; Naming Compounds; Ionic and Metallic Compounds; Covalent Bonds; Chemical Quantities; Chemical Reactions; Stoichiometry; Gas Laws; Solutions; Thermochemistry; Acids and bases, and Oxidation Reduction.

A typical unit will take approximately two weeks. Each unit will include lectures, hands on activities, handouts, labs, videos, quizzes and a test.

Materials: Please bring these materials to class each day.

1. Notebook and/or Folder: Something used for taking notes and keeping handouts.

2. Writing utensil: Pen or pencil, bring more than one.

3. Calculator: Any simple scientific calculator.

Grading:

Marking period grades will be based on the following categories:

Tests/Quizzes 40%

Labs 20%

Homework 10%

Quarterly Assessment 30%

Class Policies

1. Business before pleasure. Let us try to act like adults. This will be a fun class, but we will also need to work.
2. No Bothering. You should not bother any other person in this room. Please remember, Mr. Kolias is a person too.

General Procedures

1. Assignments: Homework, lab reports, and projects are due on the due date. After the due date, the assignment will be worth only 50%. One week after the due date the assignment will be worth 0%.
2. Make-up work: To be decided on a case-by-case basis.
3. Bathroom Policy: Only one person is allowed out of the room at a time. You must sign out before you leave, sign in upon your return.
4. All School Policies Apply: Please read your student handbook. All policies in the handbook apply to this classroom.
5. Retake Policy: Retakes on tests and quizzes for a 70% will be allowed only if all of the following criteria are met:
   1. Original score was above 54%
   2. All assignments were completed for that unit.
