Optimization problem are word problem applications for finding minimums and maximums. The calculus part is to take the derivative and set it equal to zero, find the critical points, then check whether or not the critical points are minima or maxima.
The hard part of these problems is distilling the equation down to two variables, the one you are trying to maximize and another one.
