Paragraphs are made up of a series of sentences based around a topic or idea. Without clear paragraphs it is difficult to understand what the piece of writing is about because there is no grouping of ideas to help organise the writer's thoughts.
A standard paragraph will have these elements:
opening sentence – stating the main idea, image, and/or character
expanding sentences – add description, and appropriate detail to the main idea
make a point – all evidence and detail should be focused on your main point or theme.
It is important to create links between paragraphs so ideas flow in a logical order and the reader can be guided on to your next point without becoming confused.
