Biography Statement

Welcome! My name is Mr. Juan Carlos Garate and this coming 2021-22 scholastic year will be my 7th year at Fontana High School. As a child, I grew up in East Los Angeles, California and attended Jefferson High School. During my youth, I listened to numerous stories from both my grandmother and father that influenced me to listen, understand, and appreciate "History, Psychology and Life". Attending inner city schools led me to enlist in the U.S. Air Force as I wanted to make a difference in my life, family, community, and country. During my military life, I learned the importance of becoming a "responsible citizen" by balancing education, integrity, service, and hard work; shaping who I have become today. After my military career, I decided to become a teacher in order to continue to serve my country and make a difference in a child's life through education. Personally, I feel obligated and socially responsible in guiding our youth as I help prepare students to become knowledgeable and responsible citizens through the use of history and life experiences.

In my personal life, I am blessed to have met a beautiful hardworking woman "Irene" who inspires me, gives me hope, and together we both change the world by raising three responsible boys: Arturo (22 years old), Juan Carlos, Jr. (21 years old) and Damián (8 years old) who is full of life and laughter! Arturo graduated from California High School (Whittier, CA) and competed in the Wrestling Team, Arturo is currently attending college. Juan Carlos, Jr. is currently a Senior and attends California High School (Whittier, CA) while being enrolled in the Scholars Academy and in the Latin Program, Juan Carlos Jr, and is currently attending college. I am extremely proud of both my older boys for challenging themselves at a young age and taking challenging courses as they continue to prepare themselves for their careers.. Damián is awesome, currently attends St Gregory the Great (Whittier, CA) and has been a blessing to the family since his arrival in March 2013. He continues to put smiles on people's faces with his great outgoing personality, smile, and his unique understanding of life. In my household we have two dogs, Rocky and Maya, who are an important part of our family and make things interesting all the time. On my spare time, I enjoy being a husband and father, I like to research, read, write, watch movies, listen to music and comedy, travel, go to museums and theme parks, attend plays with my wife, hike, go to the track to check out car races, coach and play sports, keep up with the Detroit Lions, L.A. Lakers, and the L.A. Dodgers, enjoy an evening with my boys playing The Legend of Zelda or Monopoly, assist in community events meant to help people in need and lastly just go for a cruise by the beach with my wife in my 95 RX-7 R2. In other words, just do what makes me and my family happy all the time!

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is to educate students to respect, accept and embrace history while learning how to become active responsible citizens and leaders in the 21st century. Teaching history involves creating a classroom environment that is interactive while analyzing world events. Students are taught to comprehend history intellectually, emotionally, spiritually and responsibly by being exposed to various historical perspectives and distinct teaching strategies that promote equality, justice, courage and conviction as a testament to the spirit of humanity and cultural awareness of the world. I enjoy teaching and challenging students as they become academically prepared for university life.

I look forward to servicing the brilliant students at Fontana High School.

Mr. Garate's General Writing Points

In my classes I emphasize writing through the use of essential questions, quick written responses, short answers, essay answers, DBQ questions, FRQ questions, One Pager Writing tasks, and a 5 Paragraph Essay tasks in order to properly examine and evaluate students historical critical thinking skills. Some questions are designed for short answers and others for longer, more complex responses. The questions range in scope and complexity, which is why different questions require answers of different length.

Writing an effective short answer is a learned skill. By "effective" I mean an answer that is historically correct through the use of facts and "succinct." The "succinct" attribute is important for two reasons:

  • First, students will learn to operate under time limits and need to use time efficiently.

  • Second, students answers are easy to understand and interpret.

Therefore, an effective answer will address the question directly and avoid unnecessary details and irrelevant information.

Effective answers do not need to be long, long answers are often bad answers as it demonstrates the writer's inability to communicate the crucial point or not being able to separate facts from significance relevant evidence. History is not a collection facts but a process of critical reasoning and insightful integration of different historical perspectives that allow the writer the ability to use both factual evidence and personal ideas.

An effective answer will do the following:

  • State the major point in the first sentence

    • (Declares an immediate focus and inspires confidence)

  • Organize supportive or explanatory material to follow the major point

    • (Helps reader understand your logic and the intent of your answer)

  • Use specific terms and careful language

    • (Helps minimize ambiguity in order to avoid misinterpretation of the answer)

An effective answer will not do the following:

  • Restate the question

    • (Which wastes time)

  • List everything that could conceivably be relevant to the question

    • (Which wastes time and suggests to the reader that you can not distinguish relevant from irrelevant information)

  • Place potentially useful statements of fact in random order

    • (Which forces the reader to attempt to identify your logic, usually to your disadvantage)

  • Use vague or very general sentences

    • (Which forces the reader to guess what you really mean in your writing).

A People’s History?

Why should we learn “A People’s History” instead of the traditional narrative?

Answer: To help us think outside of the box using alternative historical perspectives and in order to think critically in history utilizing facts and personal ideas. -Mr. Juan Carlos Garate
