Dual Campus It's a Big World Series: Dr. El-Fakahany (4/24/17)

posted May 8, 2017, 7:42 PM by MPSO UMD

We had a blast making baklava with this man and we certainly had fun at this lunch meeting! In this lecture, Dr. El-Fakahany  shared his own stories as an Egyptian and gave an overview of the country and its culture. This included the history of Egypt, the government, the economics and social structure. In addition, he shared the Egyptian culture through the lens of tourist attractions, foods, and its people. We hope that the breath of the knowledge shared in this lecture will provided everyone with new insights on Egyptian culture.

We had a blast registering new people into the Bone Marrow Registry in the UMD Kirby Commons! Informing people about bone marrow donation, aiding in form filling, and performing cheek swabs were the tasks at hand. But don't forget the coveted task of giant Q-tip bearer! It was a great time, and MPSO wants to thank all the volunteers, those who registered, and of course those who've donated bone marrow. Special shout out to the Undergrad Be The Match Student Chapter in helping us out with the event. We couldn't have done it without you! And one more thanks to Michelle Olivarez and Ellie Strafelda for coordinated the event!

There were so many stories from a diverse student panel sharing insight to issues women deal with in their culture. Check-out this NPR article relating to post-partum foods in Asian cultures. Shout out to Tammy, Linh, Dalya, Sheng, and Min for representing on the discussion panel!

This amazing lecture was be delivered by Rebecca St Germaine Ph.D. (C). This visual presentation will provided us with a firsthand picture of where Native Americans, the Ojibwe, live and learn. We learned about health centers, government, and cultural identity. Personalized stories reflected the traditional teachings and instructions from Bimaadiziwin, the Anishenaabe way of life. All this AND the exciting experience/tour with the help of Google Glasses. Go on the virtual tour using this link.

Film Week: THE EAGLE PHARMACY (Apteka pod Orlem) (2/24)

posted Feb 26, 2017, 9:42 AM by MPSO UMD   [ updated Feb 26, 2017, 10:09 AM ]

A documentary about the history of a Cracow pharmacy which, during occupation, the Germans included in the Jewish ghetto that they established in March 1941, as a distressing background to recall the memory of Tadeusz Pankiewicz, a man who inherited his profession of pharmacist and the pharmacy “Pod Orłem” from his ancestors, prominent Galician pharmacists.

Pankiewicz, the only Pole who was residing in the Jewish community, proved to be a true protector and rescuer for the Jews; his pharmacy became an oasis of survival for dozens of people and their eventual path to freedom.
