Session Description:
Although a common use of Massive-Open Online Courses (MOOCs) is to offer subject-based higher education to the masses, MOOCs can also be used to provide online learning for society outside of formal course-based higher education. Companies are using MOOCs as a vehicle for training, information distribution, collaboration and discussion. Professional associations are using MOOCs to provide learning opportunities and resources to their members. The benefits of MOOCs outside of formal course-based higher education are plentiful. MOOCs can decrease costs and increase the relevancy and availability of training and learning. MOOCs can provide added-value to association members, encouraging them to maintain membership. In this presentation, examples of how companies and associations are using MOOCs will be provided, and the benefits and challenges of using MOOCS for professional development will be discussed.
The presentation will also share the University of Illinois at Springfield’s experience with coordinating two MOOCs for professional development. The first MOOC, eduMOOC: Online Learning Today and Tomorrow, was launched in 2011. Participants not only had the opportunity to connect with the course’s content, but through the use of multiple course and social media tools, they had the opportunity to connect with each other and strengthen their personal learning networks. The second MOOC, entitled One Patient-One Team: Palliative Care Approaches Across the Continuum, will launch in January 2015. The MOOC is a collaboration among two universities, UIS and the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine, and two professional associations in the field of healthcare, the Illinois Hospital Association and the Illinois Home Healthcare and Hospice Association. Lessons learned from the development, design, and delivery process of both MOOCs will be shared. Suggestions on successfully collaborating with multiple external partners will be provided. Lastly, just-in-time results from the first month of the One Patient-One Team MOOC’s launch will be displayed.
First: A word about Power Pointless! We at the University of Illinois Springfield's Center for Online Learning, Research and Service present many national workshops each year, encouraging attendees to freely share presentation materials online using web-native tools that encourage collaboration and updating. What is a MOOC?
A MOOC is a "Massive Open Online Course" - it has a beginning and an end. Most MOOCs today are not fully open since all of the material is copyrighted and may not be used by anyone other than the university and the provider. MOOCs today close at the end of the course and are not openly available outside of the actual course.
When and why did they develop?
