Born on February 16, 1868, in Whitewater.
Became a successful portrait photographer in Seattle during the late 1800s.
Spent more than 30 years documenting Indigenous peoples throughout North America.
Photographed and studied more than 80 Native American nations.
Produced over 40,000 photographs and recorded languages, songs, stories, and cultural practices.
Created the 20-volume series The North American Indian between 1907 and 1930.
Received financial support for his project from J. P. Morgan.
Also directed the silent film In the Land of the Head Hunters, one of the earliest feature films to feature Indigenous actors and culture.
Died on October 19, 1952, in Los Angeles.
