Teaching Statement
[I have completed a course on Advancing Teaching Excellence in Higher Education [CED-005] at Sohar University and have submitted a Fellowship application to Advance HE. For programming-related courses, I used the Live coding approach, which was very effective. For certain courses, I used the practice of integrating active learning and problem-based learning (PBL) methodologies to enhance students' learning experiences in blended and flipped classrooms.]
From 2010 till now, I have been involved in teaching at the university level. My philosophy of teaching consists of several important factors: communication (student-teacher interaction); team learning, provide an easy environment for students to discuss their thoughts; students study groups, and engaging students to learn through observations and experimentations. All students, I feel, are unique individuals who should be provided with a stimulating educational environment in which they can develop physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. I want to establish an environment where students may reach their greatest potential. I focus on creating a secure environment in which pupils are encouraged to share their ideas and are allowed to express themselves and flourish. In addition to communication skills, I provide a curriculum that can accommodate various learning styles and make the subject relevant to the students' lives. Hands-on learning, cooperative learning, projects, themes, cooperation, and individual work are some aspects that I use to engage students' learning.
Teaching, for me, is not just a job, but it is something I patiently enjoy. I am very passionate about teaching; that is why every semester, I prepare my courses in a thorough way by improving any shortcoming and emphasizing the positive aspects from previous experiences. I am always looking for ways to develop and improve my teaching skills. I am quite dynamic and adapt my teaching methodology according to the students’ level of understanding. In my teaching, I focus on both theoretical concepts and practical experiences. I encourage my students to think about the class as a learning environment where they learn by interacting with me and with their peers. In both theory (tutorial) and lab sessions, I encourage students to work in smaller groups in which they discuss the solution of the given problem, design, and write the code together. My goal as a teacher is to communicate information and explain concepts to students in a very clear manner with examples, not only for them to memorize it but also to learn how to think and learn by themselves. I believe that in order for students to learn, not only should they listen and observe, but they should also participate in the class discussion to build their critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
I have consistently shown a strong commitment to leadership development and teaching throughout my academic career because I see education as a transforming process that happens inside and outside of the classroom. As a dedicated teacher, I have constantly looked for ways to further improve my career and have engaged in lifelong learning to remain up-to-date on cutting-edge teaching strategies and technological advancements. As a researcher along with teaching, I have actively participated in the creation of curricula for various courses, introducing innovative teaching strategies and integrating technology. Beyond the classroom, I have effectively led programmes to mentor and advise other educators, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing culture. This demonstrates my leadership abilities. By means of seminars and cooperative projects, my aim has been to provide my colleagues with the necessary abilities and self-assurance to flourish in their teaching positions. I have been actively engaged in mentoring PhD, postgraduate, and undergraduate students, fostering their academic and professional growth.
