  My Research Interest

The growing human population at the global scale is one of the leading causes of ecological destruction and climate change. The fertility of the present generation affects the population trends of future generations. Human fertility is affected by the sociocultural and natural environment. I am interested in how and why human fertility is diverse, both across and within time and space.

Recently I have been conducting several studies on fecundity, i.e., the biological ability to produce a child. Fecundity is one of the proximate determinants of fertility. We have reported that the fecundity of Japanese couples may potentially be lower than that of couples in Western countries. We have also found that fecundity varies across couples even when they have the same age. Our ongoing research examines environmental and behavioral correlates of fecundity.
