The Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) administers a national exam that evaluates a potential therapist's current competency in the profession of music therapy based on the CBMT Scope of Practice.

The CBMT Scope of Practice includes the following content areas:

• Assessment and Treatment Planning
• Treatment Implementation and Termination
• Ongoing Documentation and Evaluation of Treatment
• Professional Development and Responsibilities

CBMT also requires continuing education of at least 100 hours of continuing education in every five year cycle thereafter in order to maintain the nationally accepted professional credential of Music Therapist - Board Certified (MT-BC).
