I am Professor and Cowan Chair in Human Social Dynamics at the Santa Fe Institute and Associate Researcher at the Harding Center for Risk Literacy at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin, GermanyI study how simple cognitive mechanisms interact with social and physical environments to produce seemingly complex social phenomena. 

My projects include modeling and collecting data on social judgments and social learning, agent-based models of evolution of cooperation, developing theoretical sampling framework for understanding environmental uncertainty, finding simple rules for navigating complex financial environments, and communicating medical risks to the general public using different information formats.
