Inspired by Helene Meldahl’s mirror selfies, the Mirror My Inner Self-ie Project redefines the Selfie as a way to integrate technology in Self-Portrait Art. Mirror My Inner Self-ie has the purpose of:
creating awareness in children about the consequences of uploading Selfies to Social Media (by addressing the concept of digital footprints)
boosting students’ self-esteem by focusing on their personal positive traits that make them authentic and unique
students learning how to express themselves through art and technology
students learning how to write an artist statement

Process of Project:
Students learned about digital footprints, artist statements and self-portraits, in Technology and Art classes.
Students planned their inner selfie through a sketch and writing as to how they want to appear to others. What is it about them that makes them unique?
Students used a mirror and a transparency to draw their face reflection by tracing with a permanent marker the outlines of their face.
They decorated their transparency to match their plan (sketch) using water soluble wax pastels and permanent markers.
Students needed to take a selfie by placing their transparency on their faces, aligning it with their actual face, with an iDevice.
Students transferred the selfie to a computer to digitally manipulate it using PicMonkey to achieve desired effects to match their plan.
The manipulated version of their selfie was uploaded to a Google Drawing. Students wrote their artist statement in the Description box of the image.
Link to their Google Drawing and additional information was submitted through a Google Form in order to be shared in this Google Site.

All identities of students who are under age 18 will be protected by using a code to name their image.
