KEYS TO SUCCESS IN MATH

• Do all the assignments.

• Always copy the problem before working it. (Exception: word problems.)

• Draw pictures when appropriate.

• Always show your work.

• Take notes during instruction.

• Make sure you understand the material and let your teacher know if you don’t.

• Read your book. Pay close attention to bold and highlighted text.

• Use the resources that come with the book including the online site, glossary, index, end page formulas and answers.

• If your answer is not correct, find out why you missed it.

• If you are having problems, ask for help!

• Pay close attention to details and double check your answers.

• Take pride in your work!

Tip for taking Assessments

    • Do Classwork and Homework.

    • Review (look at your notes, your book and example problems that are done correctly)

    • Read the question carefully

    • Ask yourself ‘what kind of answer makes sense?’

    • Look for hints that help you decide what operation to use

    • Will a sketch help?

    • Estimate to make sure your answer is in the right 'ballpark'

    • Ask for help if you do not understand the question.

    • Show your work clearly and make sure each step makes sense.

    • Check your answers (compare to estimate, redo, solve using a different method…)

  • Look for careless mistakes:

      • make sure the decimal is in the right place,

      • make sure you copied the numbers correctly,

      • make sure everything is in the correct order or direction,

      • make sure that your arithmetic is correct.
