I decided to build a relatively small speaker system. It ended up being about $125 in parts and perhaps $30-$40 for the wood. The signal is split into a small 20 watt amp for the left and the right speakers and to a sub-woofer amp. The left and right speaker enclosures are enclosed in wooden cubes with "Smith horns" in front of them to spread the treble in the room. They are 3/4 scale models of the classic JBL 2397s. The subwoofer is down-firing with a 5-1/4" woofer, 6-1/12" passive radiator and a 25 watt amplifier.
It was originally going to be a "cell phone dock", so there is a slot in the top of the left speaker. Adding a bluetooth receiver allows you to leave your cell phone in your pocket. Here is a picture:
