6. Maya has some almonds. After buying another 250 grams of almonds, she now has 1, 070 grams of almonds. How many grams of almonds did Maya have at first?

7. The ratio of the number of dogs to the numbers of cats at an animal show is 5:3. If there is a total of 136 cats and dogs, how many cats are at the show?

8. Mrs. Wilson is 3 times as old as her son. The sum of their ages is 44 years. How old was Mrs. Wilson when her son was born?

9. Terrell gets 2 stars for every 8 correct answers he gives. What is the minimum number of correct answers Terrell must give if he wants to get 12 stars?

10. Malik sold x pens for $4 each. He received less than $120 from the sale. Find the greatest possible number of pens he sold.

ANSWERS:

1. f + 5 = 12

- 5 -5

f = 7

2. y - 3.6 = 14.2

+ 3.6 +3.6

y = 17.8

3. 2/5p = 14

(5/2)2/5p = 14(5/2)

p = 70/2 = 35

4. m > 6

5. w ≤ 3.7

6. Maya has some almonds. After buying another 250 grams of almonds, she now has 1, 070 grams of almonds. How many grams of almonds did Maya have at first?

x + 250 = 1070

- 250 - 250

x= 820

7. The ratio of the number of dogs to the numbers of cats at an animal show is 5:3. If there is a total of 136 cats and dogs, how many cats are at the show?

5:3 = total of 8 (Total) 8 x ? = Total 136 ? = 17

8 x 17 = 136 so 5 cats x 17 = 85 cats.

8. Mrs. Wilson is 3 times as old as her son. The sum of their ages is 44 years. How old was Mrs. Wilson when her son was born?

3 :1 = total of 4 4 x ? = 44 ? = 11, so: she is 33 and her son is 11.

Subtract her son's age to find out her age when her son was born:

33 - 11 = 22. She was 22 when her son was born.

9. Terrell gets 2 stars for every 8 correct answers he gives. What is the minimum number of correct answers Terrell must give if he wants to get 12 stars?

2:8 = 12: ? 2 x 6 = 12 so 8 x 6 = 48 correct answers.

10. Malik sold x pens for $4 each. He received less than $120 from the sale. Find the greatest possible number of pens he sold.

4x < 120

4x < 120

4 4

x < 30 pens so greatest possible number of pens sold was 29, not 30 because 30 would make $120 and he collected less than $120 so he could not sell 30 pens.
