Wind Maps

I created these maps to summarize monthly wind conditions in Europe and Africa. The data encompass 30-years (1978-2008) of 850mb winds from the NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis dataset. The scripts to retrieve the data, create the maps, and generate the wind rose plots are in the R language for statistical computing and graphics. Plots were generated using a modified form of the rosavent() function in the climatol package. Click on any of the map sections below to view the monthly maps for that area. In these wind roses, distance from the center indicates the relative frequency of the wind blowing into a particular direction. Colors indicate the individual relative frequencies of the different wind speed ranges in a particular direction. The key for the wind roses is available here.
