Biography

Dr. Miaojing Shi received his B.E. degree from Tongji University in 2010; and his PhD degree with the Key Laboratory of Machine Perception, Peking University, in 2015, supervised by Prof. Prof. Chao Xu and Prof. Dacheng Tao. Between 2012 and 2013, he was with the University of Oxford as a joint PhD student supervised by Prof. Andrew J Parker; and between 2014 and 2015, he was a visiting Ph.D. student with INRIA Rennes supervised by Dr. Hervé Jégou . He was a postdoctoral researcher working with Prof. Vittorio Ferrari at the University of Edinburgh between 2015 and 2017. Afterwards, he worked as a senior researcher at Tencent Youtu Lab until Nov. 2017 and then joined the Linkmedia team at Inria Rennes as a full-time research scientist from Dec. 2017 to Dec. 2019. From Jan. 2020 to 2022, he was an Assistant Professor (Lecturer) at the Department of Informatics, King's College London, where he leads the Visual Computing Lab; he was also affiliated with the EPSRC CDT in Smart Medical Imaging. Since 2023 he becomes a Full Professor at the College of Electronic and Information Engineering, Tongji University; he also retains a Visiting Senior Lecturer position at King's. He teaches the Computer Vision module at King's and the Deep Learning for Vision course at Tongji. His research field is computer vision and machine learning. His current focus is visual learning and understanding with multi-task and limited supervision. He has worked on image retrieval, object detection, semantic segmentation, crowd counting and medical image processing.  He has published 50+ papers, most in top Computer Vision and Machine learning venues (e.g. CVPR/ICCV/ECCV/NeurIPS/TPAMI etc.), see his Google Scholar page.  

Dr. Shi was selected as forty under forty AI talents by La French Tech in 2018, and was the recipient of the F2 innovation award in 2018-2019 by France-China Committee  where he was awarded by  the Former Prime Minister of France, Jean-Pierre Raffarin. He has been principle investigator for the China National Joint Research Fund for Overseas Scholars, UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, King’s Together Fund, King's-NVIDIA Collaborative Fund and has received funding from NSFC, EPSRC, and EU. He has been regularly serving as area chairs/editors for top AI conferences and journals (e.g. ACM MM, IJCAI), as well as reviewers for funding bodies such as ANR and EPSRC; and has been invited for keynote speeches for several Artificial Intelligence conferences (e.g. France is AI, ECCV SSLAD, IJCAI-LLM, ICIA). He has been serving as advisors for several SMEs (e.g. CYIM, SWISS INNOVATION LAB) and has been the committee members for several consortiums (e.g. award jury for France-China Committee).  He is a Senior Member of IEEE, Fellow of High Education Academy (UK).
