The current project Transition year students undertake in Metalwork is a mobile phone holder. The holder consists of several components which the student makes themselves. Each component part is made from a different material and a variety of processes are used.
Although the stem and cradle are a standard design, students are encouraged to add a design to the cradle and make the base to reflect their own taste/interests.
Group work is encouraged, and those students who did Metalwork or Woodwork at Junior Cert have the opportunity to help others.
The key skills learnt are:
Marking out
Filing
Cutting (Hacksaw, Coping saw, Craft Knife, Guillotine)
Drilling (Pillar drill and Cordless drill)
Bending
CAD/CAM
Finishing (Various processes depending on their own design features)
Assembly (Joining sytems, Design for assembly)
Phone Holder
