An unsung hero of the First World War has been remembered in Merthyr on the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of the conflict. A display containing the war medals and a photograph of Acting Sergeant David John Evans of Bancbach was presented to St Martin’s Church by three of his great-nieces.
David, who died on the same day as the poet Hedd Wyn, is also commemorated on the war memorial inside the church, which Meinir remembers being installed in 1955
David died in Flanders on July 31st 1917 while serving with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, but little is known about where or how he was killed or where he might be buried. The display case was handed over on Remembrance Sunday, November 9th 2014, by Meinir Hall of Ty Croes, Ammanford and Glenda and Glenys Evans of Morriston. David is also survived by his great-nephew, Merthyr People’s Warden Huw Evans, Huw’s brother Wyn and their sister, organist Ann Rees.
