Greetings and welcome to winter! Some people think the winter is a slow time for birds, and admittedly, the migration is over, and our summer birds are gone. But new birds have arrived, and all birds are working hard to survive the cold. I find my feeders are very active in the morning when birds awake with the sun, struggle to get warm, and come looking for what I have to offer in my feeders. It’s very satisfying to know that winter birds are being helped to survive.
New England gets some new birds at this time of year – especially winter sea ducks. This winter the Merrimack Valley Bird Club will be going to Cape Ann in search of Harlequin Ducks, Common Eiders, Buffleheads, Goldeneyes, Scaup, Long-tailed Ducks and a personal favorite, Red-breasted Merganser!
I look forward to seeing you on a winter walk. The schedule is being finalized and will be emailed to you soon. It will also be on our website.
Happy holidays!
