Revenge.
Jealousy.
Spite.
Whatever the reason people choose to murder, it is my job to catch the evil wretches that have done some ill-fated deed. Me? I’m Marietta Greenwood. I have worked in criminal justice for going on two hundred and forty-eight years now.
Yes, you read that number right!
Unfortunately, as punishment, one of the culprits—a witch-- I caught a long time ago cast a spell on me that doomed me to live forever. After she killed my husband and two daughters.
She had murdered her own husband when I had started to look for her to arrest her. It took me a decade to hunt her down. When I did, I knew there was a special way to go about it. I knew I that to catch her. I had to paralyze her with a special potion I had concocted. When I threw it on her, I missed her face and only got her body. Before I could stop her, she shrieked out a curse on my family that caused my family to die, and I was to live forever without them. I threw acid on her in my own little revenge. I was able to convince the high counselors that it was an accident, and that I thought it was another vial of the paralyzing potion I had grabbed. They were both a deep violet color. They bought it and I saw no prison sentence.
I was a wreck after losing my family. It was like having a knife stabbed right through my heart, and I just couldn’t die. I dream every day what it would be like to have my loves by my side once again.
Unfortunately I haven’t figured out how to undo the spell, so in the meantime, I have devoted my long life to punishing those who do wrong, specifically those who murder, and I specialize in the supernatural. One specific group, mermaids, seems to be the worst. Their crimes are the deadliest.
They are often self-serving and jealous and they will do whatever it takes to satisfy themselves, even if that is at the expense of others.
I have seen many cases of murder simply because of a disagreement. Their reasons to kill vary, but the end result is always the same – somebody dies.
It’s not enough to sit down and have a conversation with these crazy beings. If you do something they think is wrong, they will just kill you… and it’s usually a bloody mess.
Now the crazy thing is it usually isn’t the mermaid that does the killing. Sometimes they are the ones that get killed, and sometimes somebody decides to kill the mermaid’s spouse, or someone else close to the mermaid.
However the story goes, they have managed to keep me on my toes all these years. The cases are never easy. Let me give you a few examples of what I mean. These stories that follow are especially gruesome:
