- Proposed a novel tracking method combining the deformable part model (DPM) object detector and the mean-shift algorithm on hybrid feature space
- Enhanced 3X accuracy for videos with complex background and camera ego-motion
Fine-Grained Object Recognition, 2012–2014
- Proposed an unsupervised framework featuring non-rigid part discovery algorithm and hierarchical partial classifier to handle interclass similarity and data uncertainty
- Used Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm and the support vector machine (SVM) to achieve the best recognition performance
- Enhanced accuracy by 27% on fine-grained datasets with inconsistent quality and large pose variation
Camera-based Monitoring for Fishery Conveyor Belts, 2012
- Utilized a decision tree classifier to discriminate fish based on contour shape, elliptic occupancy and chromaticity attributes
- Developed a cross-frame alpha map aggregation technique; reduced 50% segmentation error
Object Tracking for Low-Contrast and Low-Frame-Rate Stereo Cameras, 2010–2012
- Integrated the histogram backprojection to a novel double threshold method for extracting low-contrast objects; proposed a Viterbi-based tracking algorithm that overcomes abrupt motion
- Achieved 96% detection accuracy and 88% tracking success rate in poorly-illuminated and low-frame-rate video clips from underwater cameras

Bandwidth and Local Memory Reduction for Video Encoders, 2007–2008
- Proposed a bit plane partitioning memory management (BPPMM) to reduce bandwidth and local memory requirement for motion estimation
- Reduced 46% local SRAM size and 31% bandwidth in an H.264/AVC hardware encoder

- Studied image-based rendering with concentric mosaics and various data compression techniques designed for concentric mosaics
