Cemeteries

There are many old cemeteries in the north portion of Madison County. Some are still in use, but many are nearly forgotten.

Bayless Cemetery

Charity Cemetery

Charity Lane, Hazel Green

Charity Cemetery is located just behind Charity Baptist Church. Hezekiah Tanner (1819-1879) was the first person buried in this cemetery (and an ancestor of yours truly). He is buried beside his beloved wife, Delilah (1825-1910). Her grave marker reads "Her End was Peace." Interesting side note: some said Delilah was a witch because she was seen playing her fiddle in the cemetery at Hezekiah's grave at night. The more likely story is that this was her unique way of grieving (and possibly a gypsy custom - no evidence to support either belief, though).

Many founders of the Hazel Green community are buried here.

Dan Cemetery

Davie Cemetery

Kincaid Cemetery

Mitchell Cemetery

New Sharon Cemetery

Charity Lane, Hazel Green

New Sharon Cemetery surrounds what was once called New Sharon Church. It is now Faith Baptist Church.

Ready Cemetery

Walls Cemetery

Ready Section Road, Toney

Little is known about the forgotten cemetery that lies quietly beside Limestone Creek, adjacent to Ready Section Road. There are no markers to remind passers by whose bones rest under the bright green acreage. Many aren't even aware that a cemetery exists here. All that is known is that it is the Walls family plot. The only evidence of its existence occurs after a heavy rain shower, when the graves fill with water. Only then can one see the large sunken areas in the ground, the tell-tale signs of a grave.
