Welcome to the site of Kinematics of Machines (KOM). KOM is the core subject prescribed for the students of 4 th semester Mechanical Engineering under Visvesvarya Technological University (VTU). The subject code is 17ME42, the subject emphasizes on the Mechanisms, Analysis and Design of Mechanisms. The subject is a full 4 credit course.
COURSE OBJECTIVE:
1. Familiarize with mechanisms and motion analysis of mechanisms.
2. Understand methods of mechanism motion analysis and their characteristics.
3. Analyse motion of planar mechanisms, gears, gear trains and cams.
COURSE OUTCOME:
CO 1: Understand the various terminologies related to Kinematic chain and determine the degrees of freedom for a planar mechanism. Apply Grashoff’s criterion and classify the mechanisms accordingly.
CO 2: Understand the working principle, number of links and their relative motion for the following mechanisms: quick return mechanism, straight line motion mechanism, intermittent motion mechanism and steering gear mechanisms.
CO 3: To find velocity and acceleration for various planar mechanisms by relative velocity and acceleration method, Instantaneous centre method and Klein’s construction applied to slider crank mechanism.
CO 4: To find velocity and acceleration for four bar and slider crank mechanism by using complex algebra method (analytical method). Design the mechanisms by using Frudenstein’s equation.
CO 5: Understand various terminologies of Spur gear, to determine length of path of contact, arc of contact and minimum number of teeths required to avoid interference of gears. Analyse various types of gear trains to determine the design parameters such as number of teeths and speed of the various gears for a given gear train.
CO 6: Ability to understand the different types of follower motions, design the cams to generate the required output motion and analysis of cam with flat faced follower.
