Chicken Wing-off & GW Photo Contest

Chicken Wing-off

Have tongs, will travel.  They came from exotic locales: the mean streets of Rockville, historic Germantown, the bustling Washingtonian Center, and even the far away outpost of Urbana.  They spent untold hours rubbing their chicken...ahem...wings in preparation of a showdown that pit man against man.  They wove spice, heat, and imagination together to create flavor profiles about which most dare not dream.  What drives seemingly normal chefs to such extremes?  What could be worth risking food-borne salmonella and burning the hair off your knuckles? Tribute, lads. Tribute to the one and only Gary Williams.

The annual Wing Winner is the chef or chefs responsible for making the best chicken wings as judged at the tailgate.  The Wing Winner is awarded a certificate of achievement, often referred to by the national media as "The Gary".  Unlike most trophies which are awarded at other major cooking competitions in North America, a new Gary is not made each year; winners keep it until a new champion is crowned.

The inaugural Gary Williams Chicken Wing-off took place on October 6, 2012 in College Park, Maryland.

GW Photo Contest

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. With this in mind, we pay homage to Coach Williams in the second event which requires that participants pose as the Sultan of Sweat, the Colossus of Cole--Gary Williams--in the GW Photo Contest.  The annual GW Photo Winner is the participant which most resembles Gary Williams in the infamous chicken wing photo.  The GW Photo Winner is awarded the Official Icehole Bragging Rights (IBR) until a new victor is crowned.
