Course Information (Grade 11 Physics)
This course develops students’ understanding of the basic concepts of physics. Students will explore kinematics, with an emphasis on linear motion; different kinds of forces; energy transformations; the properties of mechanical waves and sound; and electricity and magnetism. They will enhance their scientific investigation skills as they test laws of physics. In addition, they will analyse the interrelationships between physics and technology, and consider the impact of technological applications of physics on society and the environment.
In accordance with Board Policies and initiatives, our course focuses on Equity/Inclusivity, Modern Learning, Mental Health, Well-Being and Mathematics through topics, tasks, presentations and projects.
The goal of the science department is to ensure student achievement through engagement and personally relevant material and information.
The following topics are covered in the course (the exact order may be different)
· Unit 1 – Kinematics in One Dimension
· Unit 2 – Kinematics in Two Dimensions
· Unit 3 – Forces
· Unit 4 – Energy and Society
· Unit 5 – Electricity and Magnetism
· Unit 6 – Waves and Sound
Students will be assessed and evaluated according to provincial standards and curriculum expectations as outlined in the secondary curriculum documents. Teachers will ensure that the evaluation strategies designed to improved student achievement are fair, valid, reliable and are varied in nature to provide many opportunities for students to demonstrate the full range of their learning. Students will be provided with both written and verbal feedback throughout the course to improve and guide their achievement of the overall and specific expectations of this course.
The grade assigned will be based on a range of formative and summative evaluations including but not limited to lab reports, presentations, research assignments, quizzes, tests, in-class assignments, and peer assessments.
PLEASE REFER TO THE MDHS ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION POLICY FOR THE COMPLETE POLICY REGARDING MISSED AND/OR LATE ASSESSMENTS AND EVALUATIONS. THESE POLICIES WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.
· Asking questions and/or seeking extra help about any concept or assignment you do not understand!
· Attending class on a daily basis, and taking an active part in the learning process;
· Maintaining a complete, neat and well organized notebook;
· Bringing a textbook on a daily basis (The textbook replacement fee is $105.00)
· Completing assignments to the best of their ability; submitting work on time;
· Discussing difficulty in meeting a due date with the teacher at least 24 hours in advance;
· Following up and planning with the teacher to complete any missed assignments or tests;
· Demonstrating sufficient evidence of achievement.
o If a student does not submit an assignment, a zero (0) may be assigned and calculated into the final mark;
· Communicating to parents due dates and timelines for assignments and tests
· Absences must be validated by either a parent/guardian phone call to the school or a signed note/admit slip.
· Invalid absences will be considered truancies and will have consequences which can include detentions, phone contact with parents and a mark of zero (0) on a missed assessment/evaluation (ie. test or assignment).
· Students are responsible for all work missed, and should be prepared to write a missed test the first class back from a valid absence unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher.
· Advance notice of absences should be given to teachers when students are aware ahead of time of appointments, school trips, athletic events, performances, etc.
· A student is expected to be academically honest in all aspects of their schoolwork. A student who cheats on a test, or presents the work done by others as if it were her/his own (plagiarizes), is being academically dishonest. Copying or presenting information directly from the Internet is considered plagiarism. In all cases, the teacher can discuss the situation with parent(s)/guardian(s). Depending on the severity of the infraction, the consequences can include a mark of zero (0) for the entire assignment or test, an alternate assignment, or disciplinary actions
· Students must keep rough drafts for submitted assignments and be prepared to give them to the teacher if requested.
Extra help is available on after school. Please let your teacher know ahead of time if you would like to make an appointment for a particular evening. It is highly recommended that students use class time wisely and take every opportunity to receive help from the teacher during class. If you are experiencing difficulty meeting expectations, be sure to take the initiative and seek out one of the many extra help options available to you.
For health and sanitation reasons and, food and drinks are NOT permitted in any science classroom or laboratory. All food and drinks must be consumed in the cafeterias. There is to be NO food or drinks in the classrooms, stairways, library, halls or gym areas as outlined in the MDHS Code of Conduct.
Homework will be assigned on a regular basis to support and reinforce the attainment of concepts discussed and explored in class. It is expected that homework will be completed on time so that individual progress can be assessed.
