Leanne Grieves, Postdoctoral Fellow
grievel@mcmaster.ca
Leanne has re-joined the Quinn lab after completing a PhD at Western University (with Dr. Beth MacDougall-Shackleton). Leanne studies avian chemical ecology, exploring the potential information available in bird odours, and testing whether and how birds use these odours in their social and reproductive behaviour. Leanne is also investigating the avian microbiome, exploring the role of symbiotic microbes in the production and/or alteration of chemical cues in birds.
Joelle Krol, BSc. Student
Joelle is a fourth year biology student who joined the Quinn lab in 2020 as part of the Hamilton Harbour management team. Since, Joelle has been working on an undergraduate thesis focusing on the response of Common and Caspian Terns to predation by Great Horned Owls in Windermere Basin and owl management techniques.
Shunmathi Shanmugam, B. Arts Sc. Student
shanms13@mcmaster.ca
Shunmathi is a fourth year undergraduate Arts & Science student who joined the Quinn lab in September 2020 as part of her undergraduate thesis. Her thesis explores climate action and environmental inequalities from a fossil fuel divestment and green energy re-investment lens, specifically in the context of higher education institutions.
Meghan Healey, MSc. Student
meghan.r.healey@gmail.com
Meghan joined the Quinn lab after completing a BSc. in Biology at Grant MacEwan University. She is interested in the effect of population density on the cooperative social system of the Pukeko. For her Master’s research she is looking at the effect of population density on dispersal, territory size, and relatedness within social groups.
Sheng Hing, MSc. Student
Sheng joined the Quinn lab in 2015 after completing a BSc. in Biology at Bemidji State University. He is interested in conflict and cooperation in the cooperatively breeding, joint nesting, smooth billed ani. In his research he hopes to answer questions on patterns of ovicide, parental care, kin recognition and sentinel behaviour. He graduated in 2017.
Courtney Young, MSc. Student
Courtney joined the Quinn lab in September 2015 after completing her BSc. Honours degree working with caterpillar defense acoustics at Carleton University. Courtney's research focuses on how females in joint-nesting systems can facilitate nepotism through kin recognition cues. Furthermore, she is interested in exploring the heredity and social implications of personality. Courtney graduated in 2017.
