Brief bio: Dr. Mayank Mittal is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan State University, USA, in 2009. Following his doctoral studies, he worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Michigan State University and later as a Senior Engineer at the technical centers of Caterpillar and Generac Power Systems in the USA before joining IIT Madras. Dr. Mittal’s research focuses on conventional, electric, and hybrid powertrain systems and their control. In conventional engine systems, his work spans both spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines, emphasizing development with alternative gaseous fuels, dual-fuel and low-temperature combustion concepts, and modeling of engines and components. His interests also include development of engine controllers tailored for low-carbon and carbon-free fuels. To gain fundamental insights into in-cylinder processes, Dr. Mittal designs and develops optical engines for studying flow, fuel distribution, and combustion using advanced laser-based diagnostic techniques. Additionally, he works on hardware-in-the-loop simulations for electric and hybrid powertrain systems and components. Dr. Mittal has been serving as a member of the Editorial Board for Scientific Reports, a journal published by Nature Portfolio, since 2024.
