Notes/slides of some public lectures I have given:
Roohaniyat Lectures. A series of three public lectures in Princeton Junction at the West Windsor Arts Council in 2023.
Roohaniyat Lectures - I: The life and work of Srinivasa Ramanujan. April 23rd, 2023. The title says it all. See also the documentary linked below.
Roohaniyat Lectures - II: The Kerala School of Mathematics. August 20, 2023. The basic ideas of Calculus started with Archimedes, and reached a highly developed form in the 17th Century with Newton and Leibniz often being credited as its inventors. What was not so well-known until only a few decades ago is that between the 14th and 17th Century there was an unbroken lineage of profound mathematicians working in Kerala, India, who had independently discovered many of the great themes of Calculus. This talk is an introduction to the lives and works of the Kerala School of Mathematics. Most of the talk will be accessible to a general audience. Only towards the end of the talk, a bit of high school level of Mathematics will be assumed to explain some of the ideas. Towards the end, I adumbrated Madhava's proof of his series for pi.
Roohaniyat Lectures-III. Panorama of Indian Mathematics: From the ancient to the modern. November 5th, 2023. This talk gave a sweeping view of the mathematics that has come out from the Indian subcontinent. I hope to give the audience an appreciation for a few prominent examples of mathematic(ian)s starting from the Indus valley civilization, through the Vedic, Classical, and Medieval periods, right up to pre-Indian-independence and the first couple of decades of post-independence when modern India took off. No knowledge of mathematics is pre-supposed other than high school level algebra and geometry, and a bit of Calculus for some later examples.
