Street standardization

As the following table demonstrates, the ZP4 database lists every street name in a "standardized" format consisting of four columns: predirection, street name, suffix, and postdirection.

The predirection (Pre) and postdirection (Post) columns at each end of the street names are the geographic directions which sometimes precede and follow street names. They are always abbreviated compass headings: N, S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, and SW for north, south, east, west, northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest.

Numeric street names are right-justified in the first four positions of the Street column.

Any abbreviation in the Suffix column between the street name and the postdirectional will be a standard street "suffix" that frequently appears as a trailing designator in street addresses: ST for street, RD for road, BLVD for boulevard, and so on.

Post Office™ boxes are listed as PO BOX in the street name field, rural routes are listed as RR, and highway contracts are listed as HC.

Occasionally, special addresses (such as names of schools or businesses) are included among the street names.
