This Page is Just for Fun

Look at you, you internet sleuth, you found my "hidden page."

Academia, in my experience, is all-consuming, so I often laugh when people ask about my hobbies.  To demonstrate that I do actually possess hobbies that do not revolve around my work (read:  my life) I created this page.

Nerdy Science Humor

As my former students can attest, I love nerdy science humor (also dad jokes -not sorry). My favorite comic is the Akward Yeti, but more specifically heart and brain, which personifies human organs! This "hobby" may be cheating as nerdy science humor is sometimes related to my work.

My Pets

I adopted Sacha, my cat, in 2008. We've been cuddle buddies ever since. As depicted below Sacha is frequently unimpressed when I work in the evening. She is totally okay with communicating her displeasure by (1) attacking my pen, (2) sitting on my prepatory materials, or (3) inserting herself between me and my keyboard. While working on my dissertation we came to a compromise.  My lap is hers for occupation, while I sit in my desk chair and work on my laptop. If we do regular skype meetings, you've probably met her tail, for which I apologize, but she does not.

I adopted Holly in September of 2015.  She is simultaneously the sweetest and most anxious canine member to ever join my family.  Hell hath no fury (of anxiety) like this dog when her Mommy (hey! that's me!) leaves or so I hear.  Her WHOLE body wiggles when she sees 'her people' and it's pretty adorable. This little ball of energy is definitely 'my baby' and I spoil her rotten. Holly is a lab-hound mix. She's not the brightest, but we love her anyway.

Camping, Hiking, & Kayaking Oh, My!

I love escaping to the Delaware Water Gap any time I can, which is about 2 or 3 weekends a year.  If you ever receive an email telling you I am off the grid, it's pretty likely I am enjoying this view or paddling down this river. Since moving to New England, I've also been introduced to Maine. We're friends, Maine and I. What's not to love?

I also enjoy hiking. My bucket list includes hiking the entire Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail in small sections.

Halloween, Thrillers, and Stephen King

I love fall and most things that come with it. Examples of my autumnal delights include carving pumpkins and roasting the seeds, picking apples and making apple crisp, and all things Halloween!

I love reading and watching good thrillers. My favorite author is Stephen King; I have a whole bookshelf devoted to just his works in my home office. At the risk of aging myself, my favorite television show remains The X-Files, although I do also have a soft spot for old episodes of The West Wing.

Audiobooks

My husband sometimes compares me to a Granny, because I LOVE listening to audiobooks.  I started listening to books on tape (I'm aging myself again) when I was in middle school.  I've always been a voracious reader, but I don't always have time to sit down to read.  Thus, I borrow and listen to audiobooks from my local library constantly. I listen to them while I do household tasks, drive, walk or am doing anything in  need of  a little audio-distraction.  I have a hefty collection in my itunes library and enjoy listening to old favorites.  As an example of my nerdom in this category, I am a huge fan of Harry Potter. My  husband and I were living in New York City when the last book was released. We, of course, attended the Union Square midnight book release party.  We chose that party in particular because I was incredibly excited to listen to a live-reading by Jim Dale, who narrates the audiobooks.
