This Page is Just for Fun
Academia, in my experience, is all-consuming, so I often laugh when people ask about my hobbies. To demonstrate that I do actually possess hobbies that do not revolve around my work I created this page.

Camping, Hiking, & Kayaking Oh, My!
I love escaping to the Delaware Water Gap or New England any time I can, which is about 2 or 3 weekends a year. If you ever receive an email telling you I am off the grid, it's pretty likely I am enjoying one of these views or paddling down this river. I also enjoy hiking. My bucket list includes hiking the entire Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest Trail in small sections.
Halloween, Thrillers, and Stephen King
I adopted Sacha, my cat, in 2008. We've been cuddle buddies ever since. As depicted below Sacha is frequently unimpressed when I work in the evening. She is totally okay with communicating her displeasure by (1) attacking my pen, (2) sitting on my preparatory materials, or (3) inserting herself between me and my keyboard. While working on my dissertation we came to a compromise. My lap is hers for occupation, while I sit in my desk chair and work on my laptop. If we do regular skype meetings, you've probably met her tail, for which I apologize, but she does not.
I love fall and most things that come with it. Examples of my autumnal delights include carving pumpkins and roasting the seeds, picking apples and making apple crisp, and all things Halloween!
I love reading and watching good thrillers. My favorite author is Stephen King; I have a whole bookshelf devoted to just his works in my home office. At the risk of aging myself, my favorite television show remains The X-Files, although I do also have a soft spot for old episodes of The West Wing.
I adopted Bingo and Banjo in January 2021. They were found between Christmas and New Years wandering the streets of Akron. They're still learning the rules of living inside. While they had no trouble learning the delights of soft bed, their other mistakes are hilarious. "You mean dogs don't belong on window sills or end tables? Preposterous!" They're rambunctious, occasionally mischievous, and very loving boys.
My husband sometimes compares me to a Granny, because I LOVE listening to audiobooks. I started listening to books on tape (I'm aging myself again) when I was in middle school. I've always been a voracious reader, but I don't always have time to sit down to read. Thus, I borrow and listen to audiobooks from my local library constantly. I listen to them while I do household tasks, drive, walk or am doing anything in need of a little audio-distraction. I have a hefty collection in my itunes library and enjoy listening to old favorites. As an example of my nerdom in this category, I am a huge fan of Harry Potter. My husband and I were living in New York City when the last book was released. We, of course, attended the Union Square midnight book release party. We chose that party in particular because I was incredibly excited to listen to a live-reading by Jim Dale, who narrates the audiobooks.
I played softball for most of my life, and am currently delighting in sharing my love for the game with my son Toby. I coached for fun while I was in college (swimming) and have rediscovered my love for coaching littles when I became my son's baseball coach in spring 2017. I love being around kids, playing and being totally goofy with them. It's also a GREAT way to blow of steam. The best part about coaching is getting to be all proud of 'my kids' when they make an awesome play, or demonstrate excellent sportsmanship. I love each of my players like they're my own and this experience has been one of the most rewarding of my life. Seeing kids improve and have a blast together is AWESOME!
