Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR)

sustainable management and protection of ecosystems to reduce disaster risk and increase resilience


Partners: United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Partners for Resilience (PfR) - Cordaid, Care Nederland, Wetlands International, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, the Netherlands Red Cross, the European Union.

Since 2019, UNEP has partnered with the Netherlands Red Cross (NLRC) to implement Up-Scaling Community Resilience through Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR). NLRC is the main implementing entity for Partners for Resilience (PfR), a consortium of five NGOs based in the Netherlands.


The PfR alliance started its collaboration in 2010 and continued its work under the strategic partnership with the Netherlands government in 2016. The alliance consists of five Dutch based organisations: Cordaid, Care Nederland, Wetlands International, the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre and the Netherlands Red Cross and about 50 partner civil society organisations (CSO’s) worldwide - active at grassroots, national, regional and global level.

The Project objective

  • Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) - sustainable management and protection of ecosystems to reduced disaster risk and increase resilience

  • Enhanced resilience of 125.000 people living in communities and countries to disasters (including from Climate risks) through the scaling up of Eco-DRR implementation.

  • Strengthened integrated risk management and inclusive risk governance by supporting development and scaling up of Eco-DRR actions and citizen-based monitoring of disaster and climate resilient policies and practices.


The project focuses on 4 countries where the UNEP, Netherlands Red Cross and partners have established project activities, namely: India, Indonesia, Haiti, and Uganda

  • India: wetland restoration

  • Haiti: reforestation

  • Uganda: reforestation

  • Indonesia: peatland restoration and reforestation

Tasks

  • Generate Cost Benefit Analysis (CBA) framework and CBA analysis of interventions in the 5 sites/countries (Ethiopia, Haiti, India, Indonesia and Uganda) .

  • Examine relationship between CBA results (i.e., Efficiency Assessment) and Equity in the communities under exam.



Methodology

  • Interviews with local stakeholders via zoom

    • Client liaison(s) and students will meet as needed starting in December.
