If your ball club wants or needs a play-by-play broadcaster who has a real grasp of the game, I believe you and your audience will enjoy listening to me. A product of the last days of the three-team era in New York, I got my first crack at doing play-by-play professionally in the Eastern League, while surrounded by Red Sox Nation.Later, while I was working in the Southern League, a retired Red Barber, at his home in Tallahassee, gave me this simple advice: “Pretend you’re talking to one person.” When I am in the booth, I have tried to heed that wisdom by painting a picture on air, describing the action in an easy-going manner with an attention to detail, while mixing in my natural emotion. I fill those “dead air” moments with a blend of stories, anecdotes and commentary, weaving my knowledge of the game and its history into every broadcast.
One of my partners has included Rico Petrocelli, a former Boston Red Sox All-Star infielder, who brought major league perspective. I have also worked with a veteran minor league broadcaster and my brother-in-law, who has immense technical knowledge of the game. Whoever the partner, I am able to adapt my style in order to incorporate their kind of color commentary and analysis.
I came very close to getting a shot in The Show with Montreal a few years back. The dream of broadcasting full-time for a ball club – be it in the majors or minor leagues – has never died. I would welcome the opportunity to entertain your listeners.
