For prospective graduate students

Here is a list of good possible topics related to work I have done:

  • Emergentism v. scale freedom: subtle comparisons

  • What is the relationship between the time scales of micro processes and macro processes? Why are they so different?

  • Scale freedom in statistical-mechanical physics

  • Scale freedom in theories of the structure of matter

  • Trust and the reasoning on which it rests

  • Promising and the reasoning on which it rests

  • Commital reasoning

  • Precautionary reasoning

  • What is a goal?

  • How does repeated interaction with the same thing (same house, say) result in our very experience of that thing being different over time? In other words, how does familiarity affect the experience of an object?

  • the sociology of dress, and the way that dress represents the person, today by contrast with ages past

I commend these topics to you. There is very little literature, especially by philosophers, on these topics. So your approach to them will involve looking at where current literatures come short of actually engaging these topics. Think about how you might approach this question, and begin exploring some of the literature so that you're conversant with potential points of contact.
