On the macroeconomic implications of import competition in a small open economy

Recent trade literature demonstrates that import competition enhances domestic productivity and generates a favorable terms of trade in the economy.  The existing literature studies the issue at the micro level and focuses exclusively at the firm level. Though production and investment of the domestic economy are expected to increase, the effects on the current account are not so obvious. This paper shows that the economy will experience a deteriorated current account balance. The welfare effect is ambiguous.

Does inflation reduce informality?

Does inflation reduce informality? While most studies investigate the public finance motive for inflation, the optimal rate of inflation in an economy with a large informal sector, this paper explores how inflation effects informality using cross-country panel data from 2005-2015. To tackle endogeneity concerns, the paper uses Arellano-Bond dynamic panel Generalized Methods of Moments (GMM) estimator. The results show a negative relationship between inflation and informality for developing countries sample and the full sample. Access to formal credit plays a mediating role between inflation and informality. Inflation is more effective in reducing informality when access to credit is high.
