In recognition of a need for greater collaboration between mathematics teacher educators in Mississippi, a group representing the major colleges and universities in Mississippi was established in 2007. This group, known as the Mississippi Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (MAMTE), is the official state-level affiliate of the national organization Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). MAMTE’s goal is to engage mathematics educators from across the state to collaborate in ways that improve mathematics achievement among K-12 students.
The mission of the Mississippi Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (MAMTE) is to encourage and facilitate the improvements of teacher education across the state of Mississippi. MAMTE supports mathematics teacher educators in providing high quality teacher preparation in Mississippi through professional development and research.
MAMTE envisions teacher preparation programs that produce mathematics teachers who provide excellent mathematics instruction to all students and supports in-service teachers who teach mathematics to the students of Mississippi. These mathematics teachers understand deeply the mathematics content to teach as well as how children learn that content. They are able to employ a variety of instructional strategies and use appropriate assessment strategies.
